The story: the sacred ebony of the South

Karungali is the Tamil name for a dense black ebony that grows slowly in the dry forests of Southern India — a wood so heavy it sinks in water, so hard that temple artisans have long chosen it for sacred staffs, prayer beads and icons. In Tamil tradition it is treated as a living guardian: households keep karungali at the doorway, elders wear it at the wrist, and it is passed between generations. Where rudraksha is the seed of the Himalayas, karungali is the wood of the Southern temple — and it is travelling north fast, for good reason.

Avoid long soaks in water and harsh chemicals (perfume directly on the beads will dull them). Wipe with a soft dry cloth; over months the beads develop a gentle polish from your own wear — that patina is the point.
