Hematite

What it is: Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃): metallic silver-grey, heavy, and it leaves a red-brown streak. Mohs hardness 5 to 6.5.
In tradition: In modern crystal lore it is traditionally associated with grounding and stability.

Smoky quartz

What it is: Smoky quartz is brown to grey quartz (SiO₂). The colour forms when natural radiation from the surrounding rock activates colour centres around aluminium impurities. Mohs hardness is 7.
Where it comes from: Brazil is the main source of jewellery-grade material, with Madagascar second. It is also Scotland's national gem ('cairngorm').
In tradition: In modern crystal lore it is traditionally associated with grounding and letting go of stress.
