Rudraksha

What it is: The hard, ridged seed (endocarp) of the Elaeocarpus sphaericus tree, often called E. ganitrus. 'Mukhi' comes from the Sanskrit for 'face' and counts the natural lines that divide the bead.
Where it comes from: The Himalayan foothills of Nepal and India; the tree grows naturally from the Himalaya to northern Myanmar.
In tradition: Traditionally associated with Lord Shiva, the name means 'eye of Rudra'. Each mukhi count is linked to a particular deity, and a japa mala has 108 beads plus a guru bead.

Karungali (ebony)

What it is: Karungali is the Tamil name for Indian (Ceylon) ebony, Diospyros ebenum. Its glossy black heartwood is very dense and resists water and termites.
Where it comes from: Native to southern India, Sri Lanka and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
In tradition: In Tamil tradition a karungali malai is associated with protection, Lord Murugan and the planet Mars (Sevvai).

Rudraksha. Lab studies of Elaeocarpus extracts exist, but there is no clinical evidence that wearing the beads has a physical or psychological effect.
Karungali (ebony). No scientific evidence shows that wearing ebony beads has a physical or psychological effect.
Across studies, reported crystal effects match placebo: in a 2001 study people felt the same with fake crystals as real ones, and a 2025 randomised trial found rose quartz eased anxiety no more than a placebo stone.
